		<description><![CDATA[I could add to what I said about motivation: many teachers think about motivation as something students either have or don&#039;t have.  They say &quot;Oh, this student is motivated,&quot; or &quot;I can tell which students are motivated.&quot;  They may mean something fairly narrow, but in the broad sense all students are motivated: they are in your class, why wouldn&#039;t they be motivated?  

If one of your students isn&#039;t motivated to ride or train her horse better, then it&#039;s not because they are lazy and need to be whipped into shape.  It&#039;s probably because they are more interested in something else.  There&#039;s no reason they shouldn&#039;t go do that other thing (&quot;You&#039;re just not into this&quot;).  If they are just distracted, then that&#039;s not a lack of motivation.

Everyone is motivated toward mastery of &lt;em&gt;something&lt;/em&gt;, it&#039;s an &lt;em&gt;intrinsic&lt;/em&gt; motivator.  Teachers often think they have to impose &lt;em&gt;extrinsic&lt;/em&gt; motivators, like prizes or money, or praise or grades.  They think those external things will &quot;make people motivated.&quot;  The motivation is already there in one form or another.]]></description>
